In 1857 the Good Shepherd Province of New York was founded in response to the needs of women and girls inappropriately incarcerated. The Sisters were invited by a group of laywomen to address these needs and they developed residential programs where these poor immigrants were provided safety, education and skills that gave them a more promising future in the America. The desire to respond to new needs continues to shape our ministries.
Today the New York Province sponsors programs of excellence that promote human dignity, self –awareness, growth, belonging and responsibility based on the values and philosophy of care of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. Acting with compassion and helping those served be reconciled with themselves, their families, communities and God are hallmarks of the Good Shepherd mission.
From our origins, we have been committed to strong collaboration with lay partners, other agencies and institutions on behalf of the poor, the vulnerable and those that society has left behind.
Our ministries today include social work, counseling, residential programs, youth development, specialized education and support, prison ministry, advocacy, economic and social justice work, anti trafficking initiatives, spiritual direction and pastoral work.
Board members, staff, volunteers and apostolic sisters work together for our ministries while our contemplative sisters support our mission by their life of prayer.
We also work to address the unjust policies and systems nationally and globally as an integral part of the mission of our international community located in 72 countries.
