Mission:
The House of the Good Shepherd serves with love and compassion women and children affected by domestic violence by providing a safe place with opportunities for emotional and spiritual growth, giving hope and continued support for a better future.
House of the Good Shepherd has just celebrated 150 years of service to disadvantaged and marginalized women and children in Chicago. During the last 150 years, House of the Good Shepherd has served recovering prostitutes, troubled adolescents, immigrant women with no resources, and other women and children in difficult circumstances. We have always responded to whatever the current needs of the community may be.
Since 1980, when House of the Good Shepherd created one of the first domestic violence programs in Chicago, more than 4,500 mothers and children affected by family violence have rebuilt lives of dignity and purpose here. Since then, they have brought hope and a brighter future to more than 4,500 abuse survivors.
Services Provided:
House of the Good Shepherd provides an opportunity for battered women and their children to embark upon a new life of self-worth and dignity.
Families come to us from abusive situations and—over the course of four months—complete a comprehensive program of education, counseling, budgeting and money management, and work skills training.
While at the House, families live in individual apartments, which fosters independence and self-sufficiency. Women are mentored in positive parenting and receive individual, family and group counseling.
Our overall goals are:
• to promote healing and recovery for the mothers and children we serve, and
• to enable the women to develop independence and self-sufficiency and remain free from domestic violence
